Increasing access to reproductive, maternal, and child health interventions has been a cornerstone of Senegal’s public health agenda for decades. By involving a wide array of health care providers – often those closest to local communities – and working to remove financial barriers to care, Senegal has made substantial strides in reducing neonatal and maternal mortality. Emerging advancements in family planning indicate that Senegal is prepared to adapt and involve communities to achieve success. Although Senegal is not on track to meet the Sustainable Development Goal targets for neonatal mortality rate or maternal mortality ratio, it has made remarkable progress toward these thresholds, which exceeds most regional comparators and deserves to be acknowledged. To sustain and accelerate progress, Senegal can build on its long history of prioritizing vulnerable communities, working to narrow equity gaps.
