Morocco has made significant progress in maternal and neonatal health, linked to substantial policy reforms and sustained multi-sectoral efforts. The decline in NMR and MMR position Morocco as an Exemplar country with valuable lessons for other contexts looking to make progress in MNCH outcomes. However, despite these successes, disparities persist, particularly between urban and rural areas. The increase in the number of caesarean sections, particularly in the private sector, also raises concerns about the excessive medicalization of childbirth. In addition, although Morocco has strengthened ANC coverage and institutional delivery rate, coverage of PNC remains insufficient. Strategies that integrate more comprehensive local data from the Ministère de la Santé et de Protection Sociale and maternal death surveillance systems are one way to help to better assess advancements at a regional level, take account of local realities, and tailor interventions accordingly.
Overall, Morocco can maintain and accelerate its momentum in favor of maternal and neonatal health by targeting rural areas, strengthening private sector regulation and filling gaps in access to care, with the aim of further reducing inequalities in access and guaranteeing quality care for all women, regardless of where they live, by 2030.
